Last Saturday, Fred found this free postcard I gave him about 2 weeks ago. Turns out, it’s not a postcard even if it looks exactly like one. It’s just a sponsored card which has a route map to Deus Ex Machina in Bali. Since Fred thought it must be one of the coolest place (read: motorcycle workshop) we can found in Bali, we decided to take a step there.

He was totally right! This place turns out to be the special one stop that stands out in my memory. Deus Ex Machina, The God from the Machine, a temple of enthusiasm – that’s what people say. It’s kinda hard to describe what this place actually is. It’s kind of a store but it is much more than that, a restaurant, a cafe, an art gallery, a surfer paradise, I don’t know… but all of them makes such a perfect combination. Later I found out that Deux Ex Machina has some branches in Australia (their main store), America, Italy, and Bali, Indonesia – the one we visited. I also found out that there are actually 2 branches available in Bali. The one in Canggu which we visited, and one in Seminyak – a slightly smaller one.
The Bali branch is perfect! The “Temple of Enthusiasm” sits in the middle of green paddy field. I think the term “temple of enthusiasm” somehow suits Deus Ex Machina really well. I mean, a motorcycle-freak would be able to customize or rebuilt their motorcycle here or even buy one, although it’s quite expensive, about Rp 110.000.000 ++ for one (US$ 11000). For surfer? Deus makes and sells surfboards – new and used. For coffee lover? Deus makes incredibly good strong coffee! And Deus also has an art gallery and music. Yeah, it does sound like a cool place which offer you everything you know you’d love, doesn’t it? It is a place where you end up from never wanting to go home. I feel like.. being in a new home.
Once you enter the store, you’d be amazed of how many classic motorcycles are parked nicely. And you’ll be even more surprised if you take a look at their price tag. Yeah. It is THAT expensive for that kind of modified motorbike.
Just inside the store, in the same room as where the motorbikes are sold, there were surf boards, T-shirts, sunglasses, hats, backpacks, and other accessories on display. This is where you’ll find those things. Note that the price isn’t cheap, though.
Just behind the store, there’s a small lovely art gallery filled with the works of Deus. Mostly paintings and recycled kind of art.
Pass the art gallery, you’ll find a small yard which has a bench, and some wood houses. And beside that, stands Deus Cafe – my favorite part of the venue.

Deus cafe serves a wide range of Asian and Western meal, although we were only up for a cup of coffee. I mean two cups. The price for that great quality of coffee are very reasonable, around 20k Rupiah.
P.S : More photos are coming later! We’re planning to go back next 2 weeks for more detail information about this place. Stay tuned!
