Bali – 1st Week

Sharon at Kuta Beach

As I have mentioned earlier in my previous post, Fred & I are currently living in Bali for a pretty long time. The fact is, we’re gonna spend 2 months here doing our summer internship. Well, I know it sounds like we’re going to be at the office from 8 to 5 during our weekdays and there’s nothing fun about it. But still we can spend our weekends exploring Bali, right?

So, here are some highlights of what we did last week. We spent our first week mostly in Sanur and Kuta. And we’re planning to explore Ubud next week.

1. Breakfast at Bread Basket, Sanur

Last Saturday, we’re planning to go out for a fancy breakfast since we’ve had too much white bread during our first week here. And since we don’t know anything about Bali, our lives depends a lot on foursquare. No foursquare = No places to eat. I mean it!

But anyway, I tried to browse through TripAdvisor this time. And then I found Bread Basket cafe’s quite interesting. It’s even ranked as the #6 top restaurant in Sanur and you know, there’s soooo much good reviews about it. So then we decided to take a try, obviously.

I personally loooooove everything about Basket Bread. The food, the place, the music, the waitress, the atmosphere, everything!

Fred had Long Black Coffee & English Breakfast Set which consists of sunny side up eggs, saute mushroom, bacon, sausage, and toast while I had English Breakfast Tea & Grilled Chicken Sandwich.

Honestly, I like Fred’s meal better than mine. And I wish I had order another meal instead. Next time we come here, I’ll make sure to get my self some croissants and pretzels. Oh and buns too.

2. Surfing at Kuta Beach – By Odyssey Surfing School

Speaking of Kuta… People know that Kuta Beach is an ideal place for a beginner to learn to surf. Aside from the crowds, Kuta Beach offers a friendly waves for surfers. So then we decided to surf for the veeeery first time.

Getting Ready!

My group consists of 5 beginners and 2 instructors.

At the beginning, we were practicing on the beach doing some basic movement. We also learn some tricks so that we don’t get our head hit by the board.

I have to admit, surfing is a loooot lot harder than I thought it would be. And much more exhausting too! I tried to stand for some seconds on my board for like a hundred times, but only 10 times I could do that. You know, you’ll have that great feeling when you’re actually standing on a board on a running strong wave. Well, mine’s not even strong.

I waited and caught a strong wave once but that was the most terrible mistake I’ve ever made. You know, I was…. washed out by the waves immediately and I thought I was going to die. Well, that was stupid.

Now I understand why people are doing this kind of weird sport. I wish I could do this one more time. Next week, perhaps?

3. Lunch at Nanny’s Pavillon, Beachwalk Kuta

Tired of the strong waves and the ouch-my-head-got-hit-by-the-board thing, we headed to Beachwalk Mall to find something for our lunch. It’s 3 pm already and we starved like crazy.

Luckily, one of our favorite restaurant was there! Yes it’s Nanny’s Pavillon. I’ve made a post about if before here.

Anyway, this time, it was a storage-bar-themed restaurant. It was much more cozy than the one in Bandung, the library one.

We had chicken baked rice, grilled steak spaghetti, mango lemonade and lemonade. And we looove all of them. Or perhaps we’re just too hungry that day that these foods tastes so good.

The outside seats are also available for those who smoke or for those who craves for more sunshine.

4. Grilled Corn, Sanur Beach

We also had a spicy grilled corn in Sanur Beach. It costs Rp 4000 / corn.

To be honest, we’re not really into Sanur Beach actually. It is dirty and crowded and there are too many locals. But people say Sanur Beach is one of the nice spot where you can see the sun come up. But we went on 6 pm, so…. it was unlikely pleasant.

5. Dinner at Kitchenette, Beachwalk Kuta

Awesome dinner spot by the beach! We found Kitchenette from foursquare. It got a pretty high rating you know, so we decided to have our dinner here.

I had Grilled Chicken with buttered baked potato while Fred had Fried Oxtail with hainan rice. For sure, it’s the best grilled chicken I’ve ever had and the baked potato was oooooh~ tempting!, while the oxtail was over spiced. If you’re going to order the fried oxtail, make sure you ask the waitress to get the chilli sauce separated in a small bowl.

But overall, it was a great dinner!
