Hello Traveler!

Sunrise Mount Penanjakan

Hi there!

I’m Sharon Loh from Indonesia. I travel and eat a lot during weekend or during my holiday. And finally I decided to create this blog on October 2012. Although I had no idea what I’m going to go through, I keep writing. And thank God my blog’s readers are growing, real strong. I’d love to hear what you think about my blog and what I may do to make it even better. I love you guys.

So, recently I received some questions related to my travel blog. And I’m just gonna write them all down here and let everybody read. I also add some other question myself. Haha. Forgive me, will you? It feels so good to question yourself, anyway.

Well, I guess this is a story of how I fulfill my travelling desire. And what I’m actually wishing I could do next.

So I see that you like to travel. What do you do exactly?

Well, hello! I’m an undergraduate student majoring in Informatics who’s currently struggling for my final year. I do my assignments almost every day. I run a online shop, just so I don’t always short of money. I read books and watch movies a lot. But in my spare time, I love to look for something new to eat. And in my long weekend or my holiday, I travel. That’s how I’ve been spending my days I guess.

How did you even remember your travel detail?

Well, I used to bring a journal with me during my travel. It’s like, I’m gonna write all things that has happened that day – just in a brief sentences. But sometimes when I’m in the mood of writing, I write ’em all next thing in the morning. When I can’t remember anything, I browse through someone else’s stories. Just in case they have a similar experience so I can recall mine.

How long does it take for you to publish an article?

It actually does not take a long time I guess. Since everything is based on my own experience. It’s like…. it’s already there in my head so it’s pretty easy to write em down. It might take around 2 – 5 hours, including picking and editing the photos. But sometimes when I’m not in mood, it take days.

I like the pictures you capture. What camera do you use during your trip?

Thank you! Well, I’m not a photographer. Not even closed to one. But I enjoy taking photos! And I’m glad that some people actually like the photos I post. You might need to notice that the photos in my blog are taken by either me or Fred. At first, we used to take picture using our Sony pocket camera, then we used our Samsung Android phone’s camera since it’s quite handy. But lately, we’ve been using Fujifilm X20 and Sony Nex-7 It helps a lot.

Have your ever did a solo travelling?

Not… really. I don’t know why but I just feel unsafe doing this in Indonesia. And solo travelling sounds a bit awkward for me. So, no. But I like to be in the cafe / restaurant myself. I mean, having some waffles, sipping my coffee while writing my blog is a wonderful time for me. I do that a lot. Some friends of mine even think I’m weird or some kind of lonely girl. But in fact, I enjoy it as much as I do.

What’s your favorite thing to do while travelling?

Breakfast time, obviously! I just can’t resist it. If you’ve been following my blog, you must already know the answer. But anyway, I also enjoy doing fun activities like surfing, climbing the Great Wall of China, catching sunrise, and stuffs like that. Note that I’m soooo not into malls. They are boring unless you’re looking for some specific thing to buy.

How do you afford travelling?

Well, I saved my monthly cash! It’s like, I eat the cheap healthy for in weekday and save some money, but I spend it on weekend exploring new kind of food. I also gain some more from the online shop I’m running. But since it’s not even enough, I did involved in some projects. I mean, IT project, it’s like building a website / software or something. I had a paid-internship last summer in Bali while exploring the island. It’s like the best choice I’ve ever made. Thank God I got accepted. But…. the best one to afford my travel expenses is that you wait till your family take you out on vacation. I just wait, never ask for one. 😉

Most over-rated place to visit?

Malioboro street in Yogyakarta I guess. I mean, it is over-rated to be a great place to hangout in Yogyakarta. But then I found nothing so special about it. There are a lot of street vendors selling clothes and foods. But it’s not well organized and it’s crowded. Think I won’t come back.

If you could travel with one person for one week, then never see or hear from them ever again, who would you choose?

It would be a she. And the ‘she’ is gonna be Jodi from Legal Nomads! I mean, she’s amazing! She used to be a lawyer but then she turned her life around and become a popular travel writer. You’ve got to check her site. In a matter of fact, she’s the inspiration why I created this blog back then. She’s just awesome.

Do you write somewhere else, other than this blog?

Well, I do write on my tumblr. It’s just my daily thoughts and stuffs. But I’m planning to write a travel book and propose it to some publishers in Indonesia. Wish me tons of luck! Oh, I’m also currently looking for a site which need a freelance travel writer. Please let me know as I’d love to sign up!

What’s your biggest dream after all?

To be a freelance travel writer, I guess. It’s sad that I’m not even dreaming about being a programmer or a software developer while I’ve been studying that stuff for years. But I found myself enjoying writing so much. And I feel so alive exploring new things. So I’m pretty sure that’s what I wanna do in the future. It’s so good to finally know what I like the most, you know. At least, I know what it’s like to have a hobby. I know what to do in my spare time. And I know what I’d love to do in the rest of my life. I want to keep writing, that’s all.

Hi Sharon, it’s nice to read your answers to all those questions. Want to be a writer while studying IT? Wow, seems that you choose the wrong path 😛 But it’s ok I think, since I also experiencing a similar condition. I’m an accountant, but most of my books are about computer, photography and traveling 😀

    1. Sharon Loh berkata:

      hi om! 😉

well… i know it sounds silly, but i enjoy myself so much when i’m writing. not when i’m developing a software or something.

wow! how could a accountant write books about computer?? 😀

      1. chris13jkt berkata:

Hi Sharon, you misunderstood me. What I mean with my books is the books in my library, not the book I write 😀

        1. Sharon Loh berkata:

ooops! my bad hehehe. it’s just fun to read books which are not related to our major, is it? 😉

          1. chris13jkt berkata:

Yup, as long as the subject of the books are quite interesting 🙂

It’s neat learning more about you. I wouldn’t be surprised if you could combine your interests in computers and writing for a career. 🙂

    1. Sharon Loh berkata:

Thank you Kayla! I would love to learn more about you as well. What about posting something similar? 😉

Well, I wish I could! I can’t even imagine what my future might be.

      1. Kayla Stierwalt berkata:

I’ll have to consider doing something similar. It’s neat to know some personal information about the people writing the posts you read. Maybe I can start by responding to my nomination posts. They include questions and such. 🙂

You’ll get there. The future has a neat way of unfolding.

It is nice to that you have the luxury of traveling and learning new things. It inspires others to do the same but, I wonder how much does it cost to travel? 🙂

    1. Sharon Loh berkata:

      Hi Margaret!

Thanks for stopping by my blog and put a comment in it 😀
Well, my travel expenses varies. When I lived in Bali for 2 months, I spend around US$800, but then, I don’t have to spend more than US$30 in Bandung. It really depends on my destination. 🙂

Hi Sharon, nice to read your blog… Do you study & stay in Indonesia or abroad? Oya, you can try to contact Elex Media if you want to publish traveling book, they are still looking for travel writer…

    1. Sharon Loh berkata:

Hi mas Puput! I’m thrilled that you visit my blog. Thank you!

I’m currently staying and studying in Indonesia 😀 In Bandung to be exact 🙂
Wow, really? Thanks for the information. Do I need to make a book draft myself, or do Elex Media provide some book ‘topic’ or something?

      1. puputaryanto berkata:

Oh, kuliah di Bandung toh, kirain di Spore atau Malay 😛 Biasanya sih penulis yang ngajuin topik, tinggal editornya setuju atau nggak… Tapi kalo minta topik dari penerbit juga bisa.
